Dry Cleaning vs Laundry: Which Should You Choose?

By the Freshfolds team · Published 2026-10-08 · 5 min read

Both services get clothes clean, but they work in very different ways. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason a favourite garment comes back changed.

How they differ

Laundry uses water and detergent. It is excellent for sweat, dirt and everyday grime on fabrics that tolerate moisture and agitation.

Dry cleaning uses a liquid solvent instead of water. It is gentler on fabrics that shrink, bleed, wrinkle permanently or lose their structure when wet.

Choose laundry for

  • Cotton T-shirts and shirts
  • Jeans and trousers
  • Kurtas and shalwars
  • Most everyday cotton and linen wear

Choose dry cleaning for

  • Blazers and suits
  • Silk, wool and woollen blends
  • Sarees with zari, lehengas and gowns
  • Shawls, jackets and anything marked dry clean only

What it costs

Dry cleaning costs more because the process and handling are more specialised. At Freshfolds a shirt is ₹99 for laundry and ₹140 for dry cleaning; a saree is ₹250 versus ₹375. See every price on the rates page.

A simple test

If you would happily wash it at home, send it to laundry. If you would hesitate, it probably belongs in dry cleaning. And when you are unsure, check the care label or ask us.

Frequently asked questions

Is dry cleaning better than washing?

Not always. It is better for delicate and structured fabrics, while everyday cotton is perfectly happy, and often better served, in laundry.

Does dry cleaning use water?

No. It uses a solvent in place of water, which is why it suits fabrics that do not tolerate being soaked.
